Beginning at this stage of development, Ansley’s length will be measured from top of head to toe — which makes her nearly a full 15 inches now (given her genetic predisposition it wouldn’t surprise me if she was a little longer than that). And at just over two pounds, she has doubled in weight from four weeks ago. Her auditory development is progressing as the network of nerves to the ears matures. And even though the sounds Ansley hears are muffled (thanks to the creamy coating of vernix covering those ears), she can recognize both mine and Josh's voices. It is a possibility at this point in the pregnancy that if Josh presses his ear to my stomach, he might be able to hear the her heartbeat. (we’ll experiment and let you know:) Her taste buds are very developed now too (with more taste buds than she will ever have outside the womb, actually). If I eat spicy foods (that I love so dearly these days), Ansley should be able to taste the difference in the amniotic fluid (but we have different mealtimes, with hers coming about two hours after mine). Some babies will even respond to that spicy food by hiccuping. And although hiccups (which will feel like belly spasms to me) may seem like they're disturbing to her, she isn't stressed at all. It's just one more sensation that babies need to get used to.
I had my first shower yesterday and it was WONDERFUL! It was just me and a few of my girlfriends and it was the perfect first shower. They sort of eased me into the whole baby shower scene without making me feel too old and too mom-ish :) My friend Kara organized the shower and had it at one of our favorite restaurants, Eclipse de Luna. (it’s a tapas place… very good and very girlie) Below are some of the highlights (there are more pictures in the album).
